Northern Finland
Europe's last untouched wilderness can be found in northern Finland. Vast forests, countless lakes and rugged mountains light up in the glow of the Northern Lights or the warm glow of the Midnight Sun. This part of the country is also home to part of Lapland and stretches from Norway to Russia. Anyone talking about Lapland quickly thinks of the mysterious Northern Lights and the breathtaking snow-covered winter wonderland. But here you can also very well spot reindeer or even visit Santa Claus who lives here in Rovaniemi. Rovaniemi is the capital of the region and lies at the Arctic Circle.
Besides Santa Claus, the Sami also live in northern Finland. These are the indigenous inhabitants of Lapland and still have their own unique traditions and customs. They even have their own language, but it is still spoken by very few people. The center of Sami culture is in Inari, where an outdoor area can be visited in the summer.
Northern Finland has a continental climate with very cold winters. But not only is this a beautiful destination in winter, it is also a beautiful destination in summer where the sun above the Arctic Circle does not set around June 21. This is the period of the midnight sun with its endless long summer days. The midsummer festival Juhannus is celebrated every year on the first Saturday after June 19 with bonfires and outdoor festivals. The autumn season is perhaps less well known, but is at least as spectacular with its thousands of discolored trees. Around the Arctic Circle, there are many trees whose leaves do not fall off at once, but first slowly change color. As a result, the entire landscape is covered in a green, yellow, orange and red glow. In autumn, which the Finns themselves call Ruska, almost all of them go out into nature. There is a lot to do, such as canoeing, rafting, supping, boating, fishing, hiking, biking or relaxing in the Finnish sauna. In fact, Finland has more saunas in the country than cars, so plenty of choice.
Eastern Finland
Eastern Finland borders Russia. In this part lies the Saimaa Lake District and is also called the "land of a thousand lakes. It is a maze of natural waterways with many lakes and islands covered with forests. A popular vacation area with many opportunities for excursions on the water, such as canoeing, swimming, boat rides or nice walks along the water. Mikkeli is the capital of Eastern Finland and is located on a tributary of Lake Saima.
East of the Lake District on the border with Russia is the Karelia region. A rugged area with many fast-flowing rivers and beautifully overgrown hills. This region is home to one of the most beautiful natural areas in the east of the country: the Koli National Park. Located around Lake Pielinen with dense forests, you will find exactly the Finnish landscape, as you undoubtedly envision.
In northern Eastern Finland on beautiful Lake Kallavesi lies the interesting port town of Kuopio. The town has its own dialect and is home to the country's official religion, the Finnish Orthodox Church. It is a great base for enjoying the surrounding nature and deep blue lakes.
Southern Finland
Most Finns live in southern Finland. Due to the vast nature and large areas of impenetrable forests, hilly islands and beautiful lakes, it is not really noticeable and you can also experience peace and quiet in this part.
The cozy capital Helsinki is easy to combine with the most beautiful natural areas of southern Finland. Northwest of Helsinki is the protected Nuuksio National Park with a typical Finnish landscape of green forests, sparkling lakes and in summer full of wild raspberries and blueberries. A little further north south of the town of Forssa are two national parks; Liesjärvi and Torronsuo. In the Liesjärvi national park you can still hike through real primeval forests with Norwegian spruce, birch and Scots pine, while the Torronsuo national park consists mainly of high moorland with sometimes up to 10 meters thick moss. On the southwest coast are hilly rocky islands with Turku as Finland's most important and also oldest city. It is located at the mouth of the Aurar River and its historic center with its old houses form a medieval market in the summer months where various crafts are performed.
