A tour of Eastern Europe by motorhome
Last summer Mike did a motorhome trip through Europe. He started in the Netherlands and took the train to Berlin. After a few days exploring the city, he picked up the motorhome at one of the depots in Berlin. A prerequisite for renting a campervan in Europe is that the starting and ending points are the same, so he decided to drive the campervan to the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia and return to Berlin via Austria.
Mike's tips:
- Park the motorhome outside the city center or in a village near the capital on a campsite and travel in and to the capital by public transportation. This way you avoid the crowds in a foreign city and you don't have to park the camper in the capital. Besides, there are no or hardly any campgrounds in the big cities. Mike, on the contrary, finds camping in nature a unique experience during a big city trip through Eastern Europe.
- Take public transportation to the capital. That way you don't have to take a big RV into the crowds. Cities are often crowded and it is difficult to find a parking space. You can go, for example, to a national park in Slovakia, Poland, Slovenia or Croatia with a camper van, as there are parking lots that are also suitable for camper vans.
- An advantage of driving in Europe is that everything is as you are used to, driving on the right side of the road and in some countries paying with the euro. Please note, not all countries accept euros!
- Combine nature and cities. If you spend the entire trip only going to cities, it will become monotonous. Go into nature at least 1 or 2 days a week. Eastern Europe has beautiful natural parks!
- Take your time, because the distances are quite long it is important to also take your rest. Divide your travel days by, for example, taking a swim in a lake or going into a smaller village during a stop. This way you will experience Eastern Europe at its best!
Which national parks are recommended?
Mike's favorite national park while traveling through Eastern Europe was Zakopane, on the border near Poland and Slovakia. You can take beautiful walks to a lake there.
In addition, the more touristy Plitvice Lakes in Croatia is also definitely a must-see. Slovenia and Slovakia positively surprised Mike, what friendly and hospitable people! In addition, both countries have beautiful nature, which surprises you time and again when you drive in the camper.
