Winding roads, beautiful scenery and lots of whiskey

I had a wonderful motorhome trip through Scotland. After a night in Glasgow, we picked up the motorhome. When you make a trip around Scotland, I recommend starting in Glasgow and ending in Edinburgh. I found Edinburgh to be a much nicer city than Glasgow and thus ideal to end this round trip with a city trip.

Before you start your trip I recommend buying the Explorer Pass. Depending on the length of the trip, you choose a certain number of days. It includes about 70 attractions. It also includes all the interesting castles, after visiting 3 castles you already have the price out of it. And Scotland has a lot of beautiful castles!

We started our trip at the famous Loch Lomond. Be careful, in Scotland you have to drive on the left! Now fortunately, outside the towns, the roads are not crowded and they are spacious enough for motorhomes. And it is enjoyable along the way. After every bend a different view.

After Loch Lomond we continue our journey to Fort William. For the Harry Potter lovers among us, the village next to Fort William, Glenfinnan is known for roads the Glenfinnan Viaduct. This is the viaduct over which the Hogwarts Express travels. Come early in the morning and take a nice walk in advance, as there is limited parking. Do find out in advance the time the train arrives in Glenfinnan. It passes over the viaduct shortly before that.

Throughout Scotland there are several whisky distilleries, make an appointment in advance as this is a very popular outing and is therefore often full. There are often campsites near villages and other hot spots. Should you still need to drive after the tasting, they have very nice tasting bottles that you can take with you. That way you can still enjoy the delicious water in the evening.

After Fort William we drove on to Inverness. A nice city for a change between nature and city. For the Outlander fans among us, this is the area where the Battle of Culloden took place. Just outside the city you can visit Culloden Battlefield.

From Inverness we drove via Aviemore along the Cairngorms National Park. Here we had beautiful walks, be sure to take your time for this. We ended in Pitlochry an incredibly cute village.

Tip from Yara:

Before you head back towards Edinburgh, it is highly recommended to visit Perth with the with Scone Castle. Here you must of course eat a scone. Delicious!

This was a wonderful round trip in about a week. Then we stayed a few more days in Edinburgh itself. Also definitely worth a visit. We were here in April/May and had pretty good weather! According to the Scots themselves, this is the best time to visit Scotland. It is also nice and quiet with tourists because it is still the low season.
