Routes along the South Coast of Australia

One of the most famous routes in Australia, which is so popular for a reason because there is so much to admire. By motorhome you travel along the beautiful coastline of Victoria, mostly starting from Melbourne.

Along the beautiful coastal towns you will pass Port Campbell National Park where the famous Twelve Apostles rise from the ground. Visit the special Naracoorte caves which are on the World Heritage List and go wine tasting in Padthaway.

A little further inland is the Grampians National Park where you can hike beautifully and enjoy the endless views of the interior. For the ultimate RV trip, driving the Great Ocean Road is highly recommended the route has so many beautiful spots where you just want to stop and enjoy the scenery.

Highlights of the South Coast

Jervis Bay

Just under a three-hour drive from Sydney is the beautiful bay of Jervis Bay. The various coastal towns in the area have their own characteristics and quaint harbors. In Jervis Bay, you certainly won't be bored because there are several national parks and different tours you can book for a great stay. One of the tours you really must do is the Whale Watch tour from the town of Huskisson. You will leave by boat from the harbor to spot whales and dolphins. The best months for this are late June through early November.

Canberra

Australia's capital city, Canberra, is fairly isolated but well worth a visit if you follow an itinerary nearby. One of the major highlights while visiting Canberra is the Parliament building. It is possible to take a tour of the building and learn all about Australian politics. At the National Art Gallery you will find wonderful exhibitions of Aboriginal art, Australian art and various foreign art. There is also plenty of greenery in the area, such as the shores of Lake Burley Griffin where you can enjoy hiking. In the downtown area there are plenty of restaurants and stores, all with their own style, and there are several vineyards in the area where you can do tastings.

Snowy Mountains

Australia's highest mountains can be found south of Canberra and on the border of the states of Victoria and New South Wales. These mountain range are called the Snowy Mountaints and are especially popular among Australians during the winter season. In the area is the Mount Kosciusko National Park where beautiful walks at high altitudes can be made. There are plenty of skiing and snowboarding opportunities but in the summer it is also a great place to be. For example, take a horseback ride through the lower area or rent a couple of bicycles and explore the area.

Phillip Island

Phillip Island is located south of Melbourne and is a small peninsula with amazing inhabitants. The smallest penguins in the world that live on this island have been given their own show, the famous Penguin Parade. This allows tourists to watch from a distance as the happy penguins waddle from the beach to their holes. At the Phillip Island Wildlife Park, you can also admire other animals in their natural habitat, such as koalas and wallabies that you may even feed. The island offers many hiking and biking opportunities with many beautiful spots to rest.

Barossa Valley

Visit the beautiful wine region of Barossa Valley, just an hour's drive from Adelaide. Many of the Australian wines sold in the Netherlands come from this wine region. The area is very peaceful and among the rolling hilly landscape you will find small villages with many farms. Local farmers offer local products at the nice markets in the villages. It is a nice variation on your trip along the south coast of Australia and is really recommended.

Flinders Ranges National Park.

Just under two hours drive inland, from Port Augusta, lies the Flinders Ranges National Park. The spectacular scenery will not bore you easily. There is no shortage of hiking trails, but cycling is also very nice to do in the park. The lush mountains and many animal species make it a perfect place to spend the day. Hike to Wilpena Pound, a basin surrounded by 500-foot-high mountain walls. For the best view of the area walk to Ohlssen - Bagge which is preceded by a scenic hike.

Kangaroo Island

The island where you can find the best of Australian natural beauty. Kangaroo Island is about 3 hours drive from Adelaide, but you have to cross by ferry from the mainland to the island. From Cape Jervis you can ferry to the island and you will immediately meet the small inhabitants of the island. Colony of penguins live along the coast and endangered sea lions enjoy the afternoon sun in the Seal Bay Conservation Park. One of the highlights of the island are the Kelly Hill Caves. Here you will find extraordinary caves with stalactites and stalagmites. The island has plenty of hiking opportunities and there is even a vineyard and farm on the island.
