Motorhome rental in New Zealand

Rent a motorhome in New Zealand? The most beautiful end of the world, that is Aotearoa as the Maoris call their country or New Zealand according to the Dutch cartographers of the 17th century. The country consists mainly of the North Island and the South Island, two long-stretched islands, across various climate zones. The diversity in this relatively compact country also makes traveling so attractive: the landscape and vegetation are constantly changing, behind every bend it looks different. In New Zealand, you don't have to drive for hours to reach another scenic or cultural highlight - they are everywhere!

The benefits of motorhome rental in New Zealand

Motorhome travel in New Zealand gives a sense of freedom. Deciding your own route, getting out where you want and for how long you want. At the end of the day there is no need to search for a hotel and the suitcases do not have to be packed and unpacked every time. Spending the night can be done in the most beautiful places, everywhere there are campsites in all shapes and sizes. The New Zealanders are very keen to protect their beautiful country and therefore there are all kinds of campsites with more or less facilities. Free camping (Freedom camping) is only allowed if the vehicle is "self contained", which means that everything (drainage) stays in the camper. Campervan rental in New Zealand and living in the campervan

In New Zealand, campervan rentals come in all shapes and sizes. Each vehicle is equipped with a kitchen (sometimes very basic and sometimes quite extensive) with a gas stove and refrigerator, sometimes with microwave or BBQ. Cooking utensils, cutlery, plates, glasses, hand and tea towels are included or can be rented separately. There is also a sitting area, this can often be converted into a bed. If you do not wish to convert the motorhome twice every day, it is better to take a larger model, where the sitting area remains a sitting area even at night. Of course, bedding is also provided. With most campervan rentals in New Zealand, this is included in the price, otherwise it can be rented separately. Maps and camping guides are also provided in the vehicles or RV depots. We recommend that you bring soft cases instead of the "hard cover" cases. Soft cases take up less space empty and are easier to store in a closet of the vehicle.

Preparations regarding campervan rental in New Zealand

New Zealand is a very pleasant and safe country to travel by campervan. The distances are not too long and everywhere there is another beautiful lake, mountain village, bay or other highlight. Motorhome rentals in New Zealand always include unlimited mileage and with a little planning you can see a lot of the two islands in a few weeks. Just keep in mind that at some point a ferry must be taken to cross between the islands.

Motorhomes in New Zealand are almost always rented from Auckland to Christchurch or Christchurch to Auckland. This way you see the North Island and the South Island and do not have to take the ferry twice between the two islands. There is a one-way surcharge for this but it saves costs for the second crossing, fuel and time to drive back to the city of departure.

Climate will play an important role in planning - the seasons are opposite to Europe. The north is subtropical and the Southern Alps can be skied in winter.

Traffic rules in New Zealand

New Zealand drives on the left, you will quickly get used to this but it is certainly not obvious the first few days. There is strict legislation regarding drunk driving and speeding. Driving a few kilometers too fast can result in a hefty fine of over a hundred dollars! There are strict rules about child seats that you can rent with the motorhome, and you should never carry more people than there are seat belts.

Motorhome rentals in New Zealand

You can rent a campervan immediately after arriving in New Zealand but it is not recommended to actually drive after the long flight from Europe and time difference. One or two nights in a hotel will provide the necessary rest.

There are several chains of campsites such as Top 10, Kiwi Holiday Parks etc. and private campsites. There are almost always showers, washing machines and clothes dryers available. Barbecues are also rarely missing. The average price including electricity is NZ$30 to NZ$60 per night. In National Parks it is a lot cheaper to stay overnight, sometimes even for free. However, there are then very basic facilities, but you will enjoy the beautiful nature.

Booking campsites in New Zealand

Often it is not necessary to reserve a campsite in advance, but during high season, local school vacations, on national holidays and in highly sought-after areas it is recommended to reserve a place in advance. Often you can still call 1-2 days in advance and discuss a place.

You can book the campsites of the various chains, as well as private campsites and the DOC campsites, very easily online. You can purchase the passes themselves when booking a Britz, Maui or Mighty camper directly with the camper (see online quote).

What driver's licenses do I need to rent a campervan in New Zealand?

As a driver, you must always carry a valid, national driver's license. For New Zealand, it is mandatory to have an international driver's license in addition. You can obtain this from ANWB. The international driver's license alone is not valid, you should always have your national license with you as well.

All motorhomes on the GoTravelhome site can be driven with a B license. Sometimes additional conditions apply, such as age or number of years in possession of a driver's license.
