It is not possible to swim in the Brisbane River, but the city has a great alternative, the South Bank Parklands. Located right on the south side of the Brisbane River, this landscaped park has a beautiful swimming pool with a small sandy beach. It is a great place to hang out all year round for a refreshing dip or to barbecue at one of the public barbecues located in the park. Various exhibitions and festivals are held along the river such as a light show that you can see very well from South Bank.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
For the true Australian feel, you can feed kangaroos and even hold a koala at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. With more than 130 koalas, this sanctuary is the largest in the world. Located on the Brisbane River, the park is beautifully set in a green nature preserve. The shelter has a large field where several kangaroos run loose and are very curious about visitors. For a small fee, you can buy nuts for the kangaroos and go feed them yourself. More famous Australian animals live at the shelter such as Dingoes and the beautiful laughing bird, the Kookaburra. During the day, several shows are organized such as the Bird of Perry Flight Show and the Sheep Dog Show.

Off the coast of Brisbane lies Australia's third largest sand island. This island can be visited if you book a tour in advance with one of the many providers. With the tour, you will travel by 4WD jeep via a ferry to the island in about an hour. From the boat you will already see several wrecks which you can later snorkel between. By jeep you will explore the island and you will be surprised how green and large the island is. Halfway around the island there are beautiful sand dunes where a lot of people sandboard. A picnic lunch or barbecue will be prepared in the afternoon and you can enjoy a delicious lunch on the island after a nice swim in the water.
